DOING BUSINESS ACTIVITIES IN CONFLICT AREAS
THE NEED FOR AN EUROPEAN POLICY

International Expert Meeting,
December 9, 2003 Brussels, European Parliament

European countries make a formidable political and financial effort to end a war, but ignore the business operations that are at the heart of that war. In some cases private enterprises are playing a negative role in conflict areas, while they can be a 'Force for good'. Often multinationals want to contribute to peace, but they don't know how. International guidelines can give standards for companies, but are not binding.
Which policy on the issue of business in conflict areas should the European Union adopt? In this expert meeting 9 international NGO's working on the issue presented recommendations to the European Parliament for a European policy.
